The 11th International Ibsen Conference in Oslo 2006
21 – 27 August
Call FOR PAPERS
The 11th
International Ibsen Conference will take place in Oslo from 21 to 27
August 2006. The conference is being arranged by the Centre for Ibsen
Studies at the University of Oslo in co-operation with the
International Ibsen Committee and the National Ibsen Committee in
Norway. 2006 is the 100th
anniversary of Ibsen’s death, and the largest Ibsen festival ever will
be taking place at the same time as the conference. Exhibitions
connected with Ibsen’s life and works will also be opening in a number
of places, and the Ibsen Museum will be renovating Ibsen’s .at and
opening new departments. Oslo – naturally enough – will be the main
venue for the events, and our conference will be the centre of
activities in August, together with the National Theatre’s Ibsen
Festival. The conference will be
held in Domus Academica, one of the three old University buildings, at
47 Karl Johans gate. The building has been extensively renovated, and
is perhaps better known as Urbygningen (the Clock Building), after the
Clock in front of which Ibsen stopped every day on his way to Grand
Hotel. With the “Clock” as the
contemporary backdrop, we shall be getting a number of outstanding
scholars and theatre people to present new views on Ibsen’s works, and
the main theme will be:
The Living Ibsen
We are calling for contributions (20 minutes) on all aspects of the main theme:
Text – performance – film – translations – theory – politics –
culture – history – affinities – dramaturgy – influence In addition to numerous
plenary lectures, the conference will be offering cultural interludes
in the form of a magnificent opening on 21 August with the
participation of outstanding artists, an excursion to Skien, the town
of Ibsen’s birth, a visit to Ibsen’s .at in the Ibsen Museum, touring
in Ibsen’s Christiania, an excursion on the Oslo Fjord and other
activities. The Theatre Festival starts on 24 August and will provide
some great experiences.
We look forward to receiving proposals for papers by 15 April 2005.
